The American Oystercatcher was missing in Hoffmann’s A Guide to the Birds of New England and Eastern New York (1904) for a good reason. Back in the 19th century, they became locally extinct as they were hunted until they disappeared from the area. Protections were put in place, and many years later, they gradually started coming back. You can find them on Long Island or Southern Connecticut in the breeding season.
