[OYSTERCATCHERS: FAMILY HAEMATOPODIDÆ]
[AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER]. Haematopus palliatus
15.8-17.3 in.
The American Oystercatcher was missing in the original book for a good reason; back in the 19th century they went locally extinct as they were hunt until disappear from the area. Protections were set and many years later they were gradually coming back. You can find them on Long Island or Southern Connecticut in breeding season.
